Three Tips To Save The Planet

It only takes three tips to help save the planet:
SAVE WATER IN THE KITCHEN
1. Don’t let the grey water from boiling pasta and veggies go to waste. Instead of dumping it down the drain, why not use it to water your garden? You can even use to water plants indoors or out, just let it cool down first.
2. Running your tap while you wait for the water to get cold is a waste of perfectly clean water. Keep a pitcher of drinking water in the fridge to avoid water waste.

3. Instead of letting precious water run down the drain, capture it in a bucket or washing up bowl while waiting for the temperature to change. This clean water can then be used in the kitchen (to fill kettles or boil veg) or water plant pots with it.
SAVE ENERGY IN THE KITCHEN
1. Steam vegetables above a pot of cooking pasta or rice – or boil eggs in the water to keep in the fridge for snacking.
2. Don’t put hot food in the fridge – the extra energy your fridge uses to bring everything back down to cool is phenomenal. Instead let hot food cool down in the kitchen first.
3. Open the dishwasher door once the dry cycle has been reached and then turn the dishwasher off and let the dishes air dry naturally – saves 50% of the cycle's electricity
SAVE FOOD IN THE KITCHEN
Apart from using up leftovers aka theSOSkitchen recipes, there are other things you can do to minimise waste
1. Freeze bread on the day of purchase (make sure it’s sliced first) – straight from freezer to toaster, or make your lunch sandwich on frozen bread in the morning and by lunchtime it will be perfectly defrosted.
2. Ignore best before and even eat before dates: “Best before” doesn’t mean “poisonous after.” Many foods are good days, weeks, even months after the date printed on their packaging. Use you nose and sniff it!
3. Subscribe to theSOSkitchen blog for weekly recipes on using left overs
